The Offshore Racing Association announces the top three finishers of the 2015 ORR West Coast Racing Series.

November 3, 2015 NEWPORT, R.I. -- The Offshore Racing Association (ORA) along with the Offshore Racing Rule (ORR) announced the winners of the 2015 ORR West Coast Championship Series – Northern Division. In first place was Wayne Koide’s Encore, a Sydney 36.  Coming in second was Scorpio owned by James Mullarney and rounding out the top three, was Swiftsure owned by Sy Kleinman.  Over 40 boats qualified for scoring in this year’s series and the winning boats were the fastest boats in a variety of conditions and races.

Northern Series

  • First Place:  Encore - USA 3632 - owned by Wayne Koide
  • Second Place:  Scorpio - USA 28900 - owned by James Mullarney
  • Third Place:  Swiftsure - USA 16 - owned by Sy Kleinman

The top three finishers of the Northern Series are all first-time ORR Championship Series winners.  Wayne Koide, owner of the top boat in the Northern Series, stated, “ORR is a measurement rule which seems more objective (and)…has been an overall positive for handicap racing.”  “The difference in corrected time (under ORR) in one race was as little as one second with our closest competitor,” Koide continues, “One second made the difference between us leading by two points or only being ahead on the tie-breaker.  If boats are racing this closely, the Offshore Rating Rule must work.  Because of how close these races are, you really feel like you are earning your keep when you actually manage to win a race under the ORR rule.”

The Offshore Racing Rule West Coast Championship Series began in 2013.  The 2015 Northern Series included:  the Swiftsure Regatta, the Aldo Alessio Regatta, and the Rolex Big Boat Series.  Races that are included in the Championship Series are not required to run under ORR by race organizers as boats are re-scored as long as they hold a valid ORR certificate.  The Offshore Racing Rule welcomes all types of boat owners and cruiser-racers.
